Waarom een Chromecast kopen, als je er ook zelf een kunt bouwen? Nederlandse ontwikkelaar Maya Posch, heeft een alternatief voor Chromecast gemaakt. Het opensourcealternatief, genaamd Nymphcast, transformeert een Raspberry Pi naar een streaming device. Hiermee is het mogelijk om video en audio af te spelen op televisies en andere platformen.
De broncode is door Maya Posch gepubliceerd op GitHub. De NymphCast server is verbonden aan een output device (TV, stereo, projector, etc). Deze kan vervolgens bediend worden met een remote client (Smartphone device, PC of tablet). Maya Posch heeft NymphCast aan de praat gekregen op Windows, maar het is ook geschikt voor Linux hardware en Raspberry Pi’s (Raspberry Pi 2, 3, 4, en Zero W).
